What you'll learn

Designated Safeguarding Lead Training for Schools and Colleges

The Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) role is vital to keeping children safe. This Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Training for Schools and Colleges course has been written to ensure those new to that role, or those who are to perform the Deputy DSL role, have the knowledge and skills necessary to take on these responsibilities with confidence. We can run this course as a Full. or Refresher course

The course covers the key aspects of legislation and national guidance that define the responsibilities of the Designated Safeguarding Lead, including Working Together to Safeguard Children (July 2018), Keeping Children Safe in Education (September 2022) and Ofsted’s Inspecting Safeguarding in Early Years, Education and Skills Settings (September 2019).

DSL Training for Schools and Colleges course content

The one day course is delivered within four modules. The content of each module is as follows.

Module 1 – Legislation

  • During this module, we will look at the statutory guidance relating to the role of the Designated Safeguarding Lead specifically and all recent changes to safeguarding and child protection legislation and local procedures that may impact the role.

Module 2- Recognising Abuse

  • In this module, you will gain an understanding of the different forms of abuse that may be encountered, and their possible signs and causes. This includes the broader risks that children and young people now face, such as radicalisation, ‘honour’ based violence, ‘peer on peer’ abuse,  ‘County lines’ and sexual violence and sexual harassment between children.

Module 3- Safeguarding Processes and Procedures

  • This module considers both the internal and external processes and procedures that need to be followed including information sharing and making a referral.

Module 4 – The role of the Designated Safeguarding Lead

  • In this final module, we consider the specific requirements of the role and identify where each delegate may be able to develop their own approach to fulfilling their responsibilities. This module will include an opportunity to apply the knowledge you have gained using scenario-based exercises.
