The main symptom associated with meningitis is a rash BUT are we correct in thinking this?

Bacteria Meningitis can kill within hours! With the purple non-blanching rash appearing in later stages appearing and disappearing or not appearing at all! So, let us look at less commonly known symptoms and we would urge you to trust your instinct.

  • Think flu-like symptoms, they are extremely hard to spot in the initial stages.
  • Cold hands and feet – indicate poor circulation.
  • Severe headache– As the meninges gets inflamed due to infection Meninges are the membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord.
  • Fatigue
  • Pain in the limbs and joints
  • Nausea
  • Dislike of bright lights – Later stages
  • Stiff Neck – Later stages
  • Meningitis in Babies
  • Swelling of the fontanelle
  • Floppy when picked up
  • Refusing feeds
  • Unusual cry – know the pick me up to cry, feed me cry

Someone with bacteria meningitis will get extremely ill very quickly!

If a rash is visible, it will be a non-blanching rash (will not disappear under pressure)
